Building housing for homeless people is slow and costly, and is getting slower and costlier every year. But six developers are getting a chance to show how they would do it faster and cheaper.

Gov. Gavin Newsom is pushing Southern California officials to plan for more than three times the new housing they proposed.

Some of the development teams said they had specific properties in mind, and were negotiating or had just closed deals, but none had full control. Each developer will have four months to secure land, then another year to complete its financing. If they don’t meet the deadline, the money will return to HHH, Winter said.Restore Neighborhoods LA would receive $10 million of HHH funds to build 95 one-bedroom supportive housing units that would be built on small lots not requiring zoning changes.

Abode Communities and Mercy Housing would receive $40 million to build 360 supportive units in six modular projects. A $5 million revolving fund covering factory work and deposits will be repaid as the modules are delivered.

The complexity of determining the legitimacy of problems and solutions is getting more ambiguous. Architects, urban planners and engineers shall collaborate with policy leaders, land owners and investors to discover and implement equitable resilient solutions.

Maybe their wealthy peop who can donate goods service or won’t mind helping other people who are retired that needs to kept busy

elmer_roldan and there it is

Build fast? Day laborers, that is already going down. What happened to OSHA and building inspection There are huge empty buildings in DTLA what about eminent domain?

Use China shipping containers.

I think Republicans need to be relegated to Zero political power if we really want to fix the USA.

Slow and costly?...doesn’t have to be. But that’s the excuse for inaction. There are more empty houses in the U.S. than there are homeless people. But why would the news cover that? B.c there’s no money for developers or the city to actually restore humanity 🤷🏽‍♀️

'Building housing for homeless people is slow and costly, and is getting slower and costlier every year.' Should be faster and cheaper. Why is it not? Because government is running it from the ground up.

My military barracks was one giant room, 50 bunk beds, 100 guys, and one bathroom with 3 sinks and 6 stalls. If it’s good enough for our military it’s good enough for our homeless. And it’s cheap.

WTF? What about paying my mortgage? My healthcare? My damn tax dollars should never be allocated to this. These people aren't 'Homeless'. They are vagrants. Proverbial bums!

$352,000 per unit 🤦‍♀️

We need them around where we live very badly. Help please.

Free stuff!!! Who is picking the tab?

Build me a house I'm broke from all the porn I buy.

If something could be done right that's great if it can be done for a less labor cost then sounds like progression.

How are the homeless going to pay for it.

Anyone asked the question who's going to clean those apartments? In two years those buildings will be a hoarding mess.

Build housing?!? Buy up Old rundown or abandon motels… Convert them and provide services in one place...

Yeah, because it's a scam. They take $2bill for 10,000 units (overpriced as fuck) and 5 years later they're 'on track' to finish 6,000 units with no money left over. There are literally billions to be made by perpetuating the homeless problem in Los Angeles. HomelessProfiteering

The only “housing” that should be funded by MY tax money for “homeless” people are insane asylums, drug rehabs, and prisons.

Why can't people also rehab boarded up houses for the homeless? There are tons of them.

3D print homes

Get rid of the red tape for all developers, and don't raise property taxes.

What is the cost and feasibility of redeveloping empty shopping centers for homeless?

Also build shelters along with affordable housing.

If they employed the homeless... even with minimal jobs on site... in guarantee of housing... wouldn’t this actually HELP the homeless? I mean... call me crazy here....

Stick built is slow and costly. Gives jobs to builders while homeless go without for long periods of time. This has to change.

The governor should be doing this instead of smoking pot All day

Californication!😎

Are there really actually people that think homeless people are only homeless because they don't have a house?

Hey , stop shilling for your developer buddies and publish some real news, like the GiletsJaunes protests in France, which you've basically ignored. = propaganda

Anybody thought of refurbishing one of those cruise ships? Or using large plots of land and put those tiny homes? All of these of course transition homes to get people on their feet

A little over 2000 homeless people in Portland, OR. It doesn't seem that much to ask to house them.

Lets talk.

Manufactured housing. trailertrash

It’s a drug & mental health problem. Full Stop.

Who Pays?

So you’re just going to ignore their mental illness? Okay.
