SAN FRANCISCO -- Walgreens said Tuesday that it will close five more stores in San Francisco next month because of organized retail theft in another blow to a city that has earned an embarrassing reputation for widespread and brazen shoplifting.
“Retail theft across our San Francisco stores has continued to increase in the past few months to five times our chain average" despite large increases in security, Walgreens spokesperson Phil Caruso said. “This is a sad day for San Francisco,” Safai told SFGATE. “We can’t continue to let these anchor institutions close that so many people rely on.”Frustration and fear over thefts have been fueled by widely circulating images of shoplifting caught on video. This summer, shoplifters in masks carrying armfuls of designer handbags sprinted from a downtown Neiman Marcus department store and into getaway cars.
Last month, Mayor London Breed and Police Chief Bill Scott announced that they will dedicate more police, beef up coordination and make it easier to report shoplifters.

I do not know the solutions. I know that once those stores leave the neighborhood slides even further . Some areas of big cities you walk for blocks and blocks and see nothing but empty buildings.
On the bright side, all these thefts and the loss of retailers should exert a downward pressure on property values in San Francisco. Yes, I’m being sarcastic.

Happening in New York City too not just at Walgreens. They go into stores with suitcases 🧳 clear the shelves and walk out. Seen it at Rite-Aid, Walgreens, supermarkets I’ve talked to supermarket employees, at Marshall’s. Everyone says these thieves sell to bodegas every day.

It's not the theft. It's the property bubble. If property prices weren't so inflated, then Walgreens would be able to afford rent and residents of San Francisco would not have to steal to survive.

When a store clerk called another store and found the item I needed, she told the clerk on the other line that I was coming and instead of saying my name she said a “lady with a large Coach bag is coming over” to pick it up. If they ID’ing you by your purse, retail CX is ☠️.
