The WNBA's Washington Mystics just made a powerful statement in honor of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black father who was shot in the back by Wisconsin police.

Multiple NBA and WNBA games scheduled for Wednesday were postponed in solidarity with protests around the country, and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics worked together to send a powerful message: the team’s players appeared on the court in shirts that spelled out “JACOB BLAKE,” each studded with seven bullet holes to represent the shots fired at Blake from behind while his three children watched from his nearby car.

Members of the Mystics, Atlanta Dream, Minnesota Lynx, and Los Angeles Sparks knelt in unison on a court in Bradenton, Florida, where they were scheduled to play on Wednesday, with the Mystics’ Ariel Atkins saying: “We wanted everybody to feel like they were supported. Understanding that this isn’t just about basketball. We aren’t just basketball players and just because we are basketball players doesn’t mean that’s our only platform.

This level of commitment to social justice is nothing new for the WNBA, of course: Recently, Atlanta Dream players targeted one of their own team’s owners, Republican Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler, byin shirts encouraging people to vote for Loeffler’s Democratic opponent. As Atkins noted, the league is comprised of close to 80% Black women, and it looks like they have no plans to resume business as usual until real change is made.

WashMystics Weird how these women are supporting a man who sexually assaulted a 14 year old

WashMystics I think these ladies are amazing. Coach is wonderful for supporting these ladies. A very powerful statement. I look at Emanuel & think that his mother is putting it all out there for her son as well as other sons & daughters

_blackaquarius WashMystics They should have gone for the head. Rapists get no sympathy from me.

WashMystics The WNBA supports a rapist?! Why? You can be against police brutality and not support a rapist. This world is so backwards. Everyone supports the rapist, no one cares about the young woman that was raped. Pathetic...

WashMystics Do they know he raped a woman in front of her kid? Do they care

WashMystics Jacob Blake is a violent sexual abuser. He's scum of the earth.

WashMystics Guess MeToo isn’t a thing anymore huh. Oh well.
