After decades of work in software, I’ve recently moved to a different technology industry. It’s been a blast learning, and it overlaps because software is still a very critical component in industry solutions. The work has meant this column hasn’t been as busy as in past years, but I have still read about artificial intelligence and, as an avid reader, have enjoyed reviewing books.,” by Ernest Scheyder. The subtitle is “lithium, copper, and the global battle to power our lives.
The author is a journalist, and the book demonstrates his skills. It’s a combination of detailed fact and interesting stories. Most importantly, it’s very balanced. While the book does discuss copper, it’s no surprise that lithium is of primary importance and focus. Lithium is the current technology driving batteries. This is more than just the little rechargeable ones you may use around the house. Electric vehicles are driven by lithium-ion batteries. Lithium is also used in larger batteries used to store solar energy and other sources, both in the home and at utility storage stations.
The only minor quibble I have is that I would have enjoyed hearing more about potential regulations and laws that would help the industry morph into a more sustainable practice. That doesn’t obviate my high praise of the book, as there’s only so much that can be covered. Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
