The US is using mobile ad data to track people's movements during coronavirus lockdown

The US is setting up a system to study where people are moving and congregating during the coronavirus pandemic, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The goal, for now, is to find out which places are still drawing crowds and could become hotbeds for the virus to spread. One source gave an example where researchers had found people were gathering in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and handed the data over to the local authorities. Anonymized data means that personally identifying information such as a person's name and birth date has been removed. Privacy activists worry that anonymized data and aggregated data can still be pieced back together to identify individuals.

1GigiSims I've been leaving my phone home when I run errands more and more. I'm finding it quite liberating.

I imagine they can track anyone at will regardless. They just have no reason to track the majority until now.

I thought they have spied on americans since years.

Coronavirus updates: US death toll doubles in 2 days to surpass 2,000 - Business Insider[Thread] 👇 Prime Minister Boris Johnson spent £5.7 million to write to all 66 million people in the UK — urging them to stay at home to fight coronavirus. Follow along for live updates on the latest coronavirus news around the globe. Deaths in the United States more than doubled in two days, as health officials reported 2,147 deaths on Saturday evening. Prior to that, roughly one month lapsed between the first reported coronavirus death in the US and the 1,000th. What a farce. Only Boris would think spending 5.7 million pounds on mail instead of front line medical supplies a good idea. Does physical mail represent a higher virus risk than electronic mail? Boris can't see past his penis. Beyond dumb. He tries to be statesman like but fails. The money could have been woene on buying ventilators or test kits instead. Complete waste of money and people resources!
