I liked Steven Spielberg’s emotionally energized, visually bustling “West Side Story” just fine, though I’m not as over the moon about it as some of my critical colleagues. There’s an e…

about it as some of my critical colleagues. There’s an ecstatic tone wafting through the reviews. I raise the issue because you would have expected that collective hosanna to be one of many things that inspired people to go out and see the movie.of “West Side Story’s” opening-weekend box-office take — a total of just $10.

It’s a depressing fact of our moviegoing moment that when it comes to prestige dramas pitched to adults, one title after another has drastically underperformed. Yet one such film has, in fact, succeeded:which actually had to fight its way through a blizzard of critical derision . It may still be an uphill climb for that movie to make a profit , but what’s undeniable is that “House of Gucci” found an audience.

In 2005, he made two movies — one pop, one serious —that added up to a sidelong commentary on the 9/11 attacks and their aftermath. “War of the Worlds” was his disruption-from-another-world movie, with a chaos that channeled our own sense of how America had been ripped asunder. And “Munich,” which I consider to be one of Spielberg’s five greatest films , was his hypnotic thriller meditation on the seductions and perils of vengeance.

Comparing Lady Gaga and Steven Spielberg as “ secret weapons” for success is kind of delusional. Lady Gaga is a performer/celebrity infinitely larger than Spielberg. And let’s also remember that Gucci can also tout Pacino, Driver and Leto. Not to mention Ridley Scott.

Maybe stop reproducing classics…end of story.

Gen Z like easy listening musical movie such as Greatest Showman and Bohemian. Not the broadway song, whatever the powerful and solid it is.

The themes the same original cast had Hispanics It's just like every other so called movement Gen Z has ,no new ideas just a CRT or a cancelling of classics I saw it at TuxedoBBTrumpTowerTheatre 1965 & it was PC then

😂

It’s a terrific film and I preferred this version over the original I highly suggest if you like musicals go see this on the big screen.

IT'S NOT UNDERPERFORMING!!!!!!! Because it's not grossed a billion dollars the first weekend doesn't mean it's a bomb. It means it's not a Marvel movie. Stop with this already! Who writes this?! Clearly not anyone who understands how it works. Not everyone goes on opening weekend

Honestly, I just thought West Side Story was pretty boring & it’s really just a rehash of Romeo & Juliet, only the ending is slightly different. I also thought the original was cheesy (& so did my classmates of 08 when we watched it) I don’t think the ReRemake is any different.

I am looking forward to seeing this movie. But you're not going to catch me in a movie theater any time in the near future. COVID is the issue here.

no one likes musicals

For that they would have needed to cast Ariana Grande as Maria and Harry Styles as Tony. That would have drawn millions.

Could it be because the leading man is absolutely terrible?

It’s too bad. I thought it was fresh and exhilarating. But everyone will come out for the 27th Spider-Man movie.

1. Remake 2. Musical, lots of people will automatically say no to a movie if its a musical 3. Target audience is older and they're still not going to theaters in droves

Part of the allure of the original West Side Story, it's in Technicolor and Natalie Wood's singing voice is dubbed.

West Side Story is a version of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Instead of trying to put all these labels on it, why not just go in to watching the film to discover what it has to offer on it’s own merit today? Versus looking to tear it down and compare it to other incarnations.

We want funny, scary, entertaining, and thought provoking cinema. Brought to us from a variety of directors with unique visions and original ideas.

All the people saying “why watch a remake? Just wait to stream” are ignoring the fact that this film actually has brown people playing brown people and not white actor/dancers in brown face. Go support this film

I’m Gen X and didn’t go. Love the original and don’t think it needed to be remade.

He made practically the same movie. Perhaps he could have modernized the musical. Essentially the same bigotry exists today.

Can’t wait for the remake of Casablanca, and ignore it too.

It's because *no one really likes musicals

It's not just Gen Z, it's Gen X that aren't enthused to watch a remake of a film that won Oscars years before even we were born, so, no, hard pass, especially during the ongoing pandemic. Why put yourself at risk for something you can wait to stream? And it's a musical.

'conceived, in no small part, as a liberal message'—Yeah, that's definitely an underperforming stock.

It's so DATED.

It underperformed because no one asked for it.
