Predictably, some conservatives have hyped Taibbi/Weiss/Shellenberger revelations up to the point of absurdity. In a tweet with tens of thousands of likes, right-wing commentator Pedro Gonzalez said he wouldn’t be happy until former Twitter executives Jack Dorsey and Yoel Roth were in prison—even though no one has actually alleged that either man broke any laws.
After all, when Twitter executives denied that they engaged in “shadow banning,” they defined the term in a way that wouldn’t apply to Kirk’s situation. And on Twitter’s decision to censor the’s article on Hunter Biden’s laptop, Levitz argues that nothing in the information revealed by Taibbi shows that “the decision was motivated by anything beyond concern that Twitter would find itself complicit in promulgating hacked materials.
It's also true that Twitter openly said at the time that “limiting visibility” was one of its enforcement tools. But the only cases in which it had ever admitted to doing so were narrow and uncontroversial cases like limiting tweets by users who tried to manipulate the algorithm by using unrelated hashtags.
BenBurgis I want to congratulate you on this piece. It is refreshing to see an obvious partisan call out his own team when they are wrong. Good work.
Oh bs.
If you have to write this headline they definitely are
how much did Musky pay you to write this?
BenBurgis How our corporate overlords manage our digital public square is an issue of real public interest. And for exactly that reason, it’s too important to be left in the hands of Musk and three of his fans. Why aren't you on Mastodon: non-corporate opensource federated alternative?
You're right. They're a 'big fat nothingburger', and the distinction is important.
Also, Twitter does not owe anyone unfettered ‘Free Speech’. No private business, person, or company owe ANYONE free speech. They can ban whomever they want. Just like I can through people out of my house at will.
It is a nothing burger. Why are there no details on what the Trump admin requested to be taken down? After all, Trump was the ACTUAL government at the time. Why didn’t Musk release those details?
They absolutely ARE a nothing burger. Enjoy being permanently blocked for publishing this dreck.
If you can find me the person who thinks that we live in a world where Biden (or other major political figure) can't get a story pulled from the media then i will accept that this is important. Personally I'd have been pretty surprised if Twitter said no.
It's not ok, and yes they are.
Lmaok
BenBurgis Twitter will render your outlets obsolete
Did twitter want to censor the right wing, or was it about misinformation that was dangerous to public health? it wasn't the left posting b.s. about covid.
BenBurgis The mainstream media wouldve taken the leaks, watered them down- and said “old news! The censorship regime between government and big tech is no big deal! Only WashPo can be funded by billionaires”
BenBurgis The 'Twitter Files' is the new 'Hilary's Emails'.
I’m happy to see the “digital town square” fall into irrelevance so some use may be found of it. Not interested in the careers of editorialists and stenographers.
It is a nothingburger. Carry on
Great read. Balanced arguments.
When you start with the ridiculous premise that Twitter is important (barely ever was, and certainly declining by the day under Elon the despotic), the rest of your argument is trash.
Blah, blah, blah, blah
most 'opinions' agree its a nothingburger, aint shiitt
My OPINION | It's a “nothingburger.”
GOP sedition texts Twitter files x10.
Mark Meadows Files are more important
nah
Lol it is
