In celebration of TheTrumanShow's 25th anniversary and 4K release, we spoke with screenwriter Andrew Niccol about the impact of the Jim Carrey movie, its foresight in the face of the social media revolution, and what a potential remake might look like:

The Truman Show became a classic soon after its 1998 release, but it has only grown in thematic relevance in the 25 years since. The movie stars Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, a man unaware that his life is playing out on a television set populated by paid actors and watched by millions of audiences at home.

Andrew Niccol: When I first conceived of the film, there wasn’t any so-called reality television. I say “so-called” because I’ve always thought Truman is the only genuine reality star because when you know there's a camera, there is no reality. What I guess I’m a bit surprised about is that we would become our own Trumans, turning the camera on ourselves and cataloging every aspect of our own lives willingly.

Andrew Niccol: I’ve always thought the premise was bullet-proof and even though the original script is set in an alternate version of New York City , I was happy to embrace Peter’s more idyllic, small-town take on a counterfeit world. As for a memory, I tend to hold onto one image in every film I do…a moment that somehow sustains me through a shoot. On The Truman Show, it was Truman touching the sky. The moment meant so much to me, I worried that it wouldn’t live up to my imagining of it.

Speaking of sequels, you've got Lords of War coming a good 18 years after the first film. What's it like breathing life back into that world with Nicolas Cage, and where are you in the process now? Andrew Niccol: The world of a board game or any game is a mile wide and an inch thick. That is to say, there’s not usually a lot of depth and it needs a ton of invention. But as with most films, everything comes out of character. In Monopoly, I chose to center it on the underdog that most of us can relate to - the boy from Baltic Avenue.
