Let me get this out of the way right up front. There are a ton of choices out there. Amazon keeps its older models on the shelves, so to speak, so if you want an Echo speaker, you can choose from among the second, third and fourth gen models, plus the smaller Dot and the full-size Echo. And that doesn’t even start to consider Google Nest speakers and all the other third-party models that have Alexa or Google Assistant built in.

And while your mileage may vary, I’ll contend that most people don’t really need the full-size Echo. Not only is it a little big for many counters, shelves and desktops, but it’s pricey as well . So when you consider that this $40 speaker is typically priced around $25 , it’s a steal—most people could put one Dot in every room of their house for no more than about $100.

There are battery bases for a number of different Echo models as well, so you can “upgrade” whatever Dot you happen to have. Here are some other options:
