For Rogers, the neon bralette adorned with a 6-foot silk organza bow and matching column skirt served as a celebration of an artist in her prime. “I’m such a fan and admirer of Michaela and her work and was elated when the opportunity presented itself to create something for her. I immediately thought of her striking features and wanted her to be the focus of the look,” he says.
Behind the scenes, Coel prepped with a special pre-Emmys facial by Dr. Barbara Sturm and sleek makeup courtesy of Bernicia Boateng that mirrored the colors of her look with bright yellow eyeshadow and black winged liner. Instead of choosing gems from the usual suspects, Akers and Coel opted for a pair of striking, eco-conscious accessories.
The look dazzled on the red carpet, but it truly lit up the room when it was time for Coel to accept her Emmy. “[Michaela] has made such great strides while staying true to herself. She’s given a voice to many who may have been unheard, and she deserved a look that celebrated her,” says Akers. “I was ecstatic! I’m just so happy for Michaela.
