There’s a three-way tie for the lead at the U.S. Open. But Louis Oosthuizen, Mackenzie Hughes and Russell Henley will have to hold off the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm to take home the major.

It’s a Sunday that figures to be weird.haven’t had such a wide breadth of players still in the mix. There are 13 players between 1 under and 5 under, including the trio locked up at the top. Last year, there were just five players within five strokes of the 54-hole leader Matthew Wolff. There were just five within five entering Sunday in 2019, too.

McIlroy has been one of the game’s top competitors for years. But since winning four majors from 2011 to 2014, he has gone dry in golf’s premier events. He settled into an unfortunate pattern where he would frequently play himself out of contention on Thursday then play phenomenally in the ensuing days—only to fall short because of his first-round performance. Yet he managed to avoid that with a 1-under opening 18 here, and he’s now 3-under within easy striking distance., is 3-under, too.
