One Alabama lawmaker is aiming to create harsher punishments for human trafficking in our state through ‘The Sound of Freedom Act’.

, sponsored by State Representative Donna Givens , will change the state law to where if the victim of human trafficking is a minor, the defendant will be automatically sentenced to life in prison. Under existing law, human trafficking in Alabama is a Class A felony, punishable by 20-years to life in prison.

“When she addresses something in the State of the State address you just feel confident like ‘okay, the Governor is behind this, she’s supporting this and it’s going to pass’ and it did.” While the goal was to seek harsher punishment for human trafficking, Givens also wanted to raise awareness about this very real problem in Alabama.from the National Human Trafficking Hotline shows that in 2021, they received 285 calls regarding human trafficking in Alabama. 101 of those were from the victims themselves.
