The Simpsons star Yeardley Smith took a while to appreciate Lisa. 'It just felt like not enough... That’s on me. I was really attached to an outcome, and missed so much of the journey.'

The Simpsons star Yeardley Smith reveals that it took her quite a long time to come to terms with the realities of playing Lisa Simpson. The Fox animated series, which was created by Matt Groening in 1989, is still on the air and has become the longest-running American animated series, sitcom, and scripted primetime television series of all time.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Along with Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, and Nancy Cartwright, Smith voices one of the core members of the Simpson family and has appeared on every season of the series. Her character, Lisa, is the eldest daughter of the family, and despite only being eight years old, is probably the smartest member. She is known for her strong feelings about politics, her skill at playing the saxophone, and her habit of judging the antics of her various family members.

I had such a specific path for how I was going to rule the world—for what my success as an actor was going to look like. Voice-over was so never a part of that. For years and years and years, it just didn’t count. It wasn’t that, "Oh, I hate being Lisa Simpson. Oh, I don’t like this job." It just felt like not enough. … That’s on me. I was really attached to an outcome, and missed so much of the journey.

It's true that, before The Simpsons, Smith was entirely a live-action performer. After her career began in 1984, she appeared in small roles in projects like the 1985 cult film The Legend of Billie Jean, the series Tales from the Darkside and Brothers, and the Stephen King-directed Maximum Overdrive. Although she has held live-action roles after starting to play Lisa, including the films Jingle All the Way and City Slickers, she is still most widely known for playing Lisa.

It may be difficult to learn that the beloved actress had a tough time accepting her place on The Simpsons. However, fans of Smith's will likely be gratified to learn that she is now embracing her iconic role. Lisa is one of American pop culture's most iconic modern characters, and while Smith's legacy might not look like what she originally thought, it is certainly massive.
