By our estimates, the pandemic has claimed 860,000 lives in America. Yet measures to curb the virus by mandating vaccination are being treated as a terrifying affront to liberty

ON SEPTEMBER 11TH 2001, when al-Qaeda attacked America, almost 3,000 people died. In response the government overhauled national security and, for better or worse, struck a new balance between liberty and security. On the 20th anniversary of 9/11 roughly 3,100 people in America died because of covid-19. Another 3,100 died on September 12th. And again on the 13th., based on excess deaths, the pandemic has claimed 860,000 lives in America.

The question is whether each country’s requirement is proportionate. That depends on the threat and the costs and benefits of pressure. The calculus differs from one place to another. For all these reasons, your choice over vaccination is everyone’s business. It matters that only 63% of Americans over 12 have had two doses of a vaccine, compared with 76% of French and 86% of Danes. Delta’s rapid spread through the population can be slowed by vaccination, sparing hospitals from overload and protecting vulnerable vaccinated people—for instance, the residents of old-people’s homes.

Bs. If we’re going to use this reasoning then your HIV, Flu, Hep, Mono, Measles, std status is everyone’s business also. I don’t want any of these people with/not vaxed for said diseases to serve/prep my food, handle any of my property, etc. Since I don’t approve of their…

If the mortality rate was greater than 30% maybe. But for a virus that 99.8% of people survive no.

Says The Economist

Carrot and stick approach...been here before...

Let's also stop pretending that COVID doesn't care about Americans under 12. Herd immunity is based on the percentage of your entire population that is vaccinated, not just those deemed eligible to be vaccinated.

War has been declared on humanity. Wake up before it’s too late. Learn the truth about the vaccines. It’s all on my Twitter page. ⚡️

Incorrect. Just 54% of Americans have been fully vaccinated.

83% have antibodies.

states' rights on matters of national heath care should be eliminated.

horrible

I doubt that any nation can be great without most people caring for the general vitality of their fellow citizens.

If asked to defend America from a foreign invasion, most of these folks would gladly volunteer to fight, but get a shot or wear a mask!?! Screw that!

Could they not link vaccination with renewal of gun permits maybe? Might be a game-changer in a positive way for a change? 😊

Of all the rights the American right fight for, they have ignored the right to life; unless you’re in utero.

In the United States or in “America”? Which one is it?

I had Covid from 3rd sep (unvaccinated) my girlfriend (double jabbed) was diagnosed yesterday. I had more aches and pains, she has more severe symptoms.

There seems to be a correlation between severe covid infections and obesity / inactivity. Given we're in a county where 40%+ of the population is morbidly obese, these results aren't shocking. Perhaps we should be encouraging a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise?

Can't remember where this came from, but it seems very appropriate here.

There is no federal law in place to protect people during a pandemic … an intelligent populace will survive, the stupid and unhealthy won’t …

Anyone who isn't vaxxed in the US by now simply doesn't care how many other people have to die

200,000 more than what I have seen. Huh?

What a headline! And from The Economist too. Insane.
