While the plot and characters create a compelling movie, there's a major issue being overlooked with Netflix's new number one film, Fair Play.

This article includes discussions of rape. If you need help, please call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-4673.

Summary Although it's taken the number one slot on Netflix, Fair Play has a perplexing issue with its marketing and branding. In this movie, Emily and Luke — two coworkers at a New York financial firm — have secretive trysts. When a major promotion comes up, their sexual relationship becomes sinister as they realize the cost of success in the corporate world. Since releasing for streaming on October 6, Fair Play has hit number one on the list of the most-streamed movies on Netflix.

Fair Play's "Erotic Thriller" Genre Isn't Accurate Though Fair Play does include sex scenes, they aren't critical to the plot. The sexual relationship comes across as more of a method through which Luke wields power. Moreover, Fair Play looks at the idea of power hoarding through multiple perspectives, not just sex. Unlike an erotic thriller, the sex isn't meant to titillate the audience.
