in a new relocation program that will assist Indigenous communities living in places threatened by climate change.
Federal law caps flood coverage at a quarter million dollars, but many homes sustained more than that.Insurance wasn’t likely to be of much help, Crater said, but he and his wife planned to rebuild. We tore down drywall together, then set out on a bicycle ride around the eastern half of the island. Everywhere we went, fire alarms pinged and chainsaws buzzed. And, around each bend, we found someone Crater knew.
“This is the future of Sanibel,” Crater said, stopping his bike a few minutes down the road and pointing to a house on our left. It was a medium-sized home with a metal roof, Hardie-plank siding, and hurricane-rated windows. It sat on ten-foot stilts. The area beneath the home had not been walled in. “This isn’t rocket science,” Crater went on. “It’s building to code, following it strictly. We can coexist with the ocean.
The insurance situation was going to make things harder, she said. Most of the damage done to homes was caused by flooding, and federal law caps flood coverage at a quarter million dollars. Many homes sustained more than that, and separate wind-insurance policies likely wouldn’t help. Meanwhile, insurance companies in Florida are fighting other battles.
Ok gt it ,ok take care nd be careful now onwards
If they have insurance, that should pay for it. FEMA should help clean up, find places to live, provide temp shelter.. but the government cannot keep rebuilding places that never should have been there to begin with.
They need some rugged individualism.
Let the residents pay. They seem to think that’s ok for everyone else.
Great article -the items that standout for me being the owner of a stilted home is the picture of a house ripped off its wrought iron pylons /Foundation and the fact that lots of homes had enclosed the underneath space of the house . The path of least resistance is best -
I honestly don't understand why americans build so fragile houses... They have hurricanes, tornadoes... But keep doing steel frame's constructions... Why?
Let DeSantis pay with state funds.
مجیدرضا_رهنورد He has been sentenced to death by the brutal Iran's regime just because he wast aming the protesters and among those who went on a strike. Be his voice before it it too late
They are building homes on a strip of sand just a few feet above sea level in the Gulf of Mexico, an area prone to hurricanes. It's a no-brainer. They should be building at least 10 miles inland.
Floridians hate government, let them rebuild on their own
The govt should curb assistance. People choose to live there & know all of the risks. They shouldn't expect the govt to bail them out with taxpayer dollars.
Special people live out there. I was driving around once-out of state plates-slowed down and asked someone for directions. They gave them to me and said “you look like you belong here, I usually don’t help people who are lost.” Told me all I needed to know. richfolks rude sads
We have vacationed on Sanibel a number of times and it's such a beautiful place filled with wonderful people. I think the government should help them to survive another hurricane.
It should be helping people to leave barrier islands/islands, low-lying coastal areas, flood zones.
The federal government needs to stop rebuilding Florida. It will be hit by hurricanes EVERY YEAR. No need to waste the taxpayer dollars of real Americans on a bunch of free loaders wanting us to bail them out.
yes, continue to rebuild and live on a BARRIER ISLAND.
The benchmark for government help was set in New Orleans … so don’t hold your breath ☹️
Exactly why Obama & Biden own beach front property. It’s a lie
Prepare now or face ongoing rebuilding. Surprised insurance companies haven't completely changed their coverage policies for coastal/low lying areas.
Although, even the IPCC doesn’t say we know climate change will bring worse hurricanes.
Bullshit
I was on the island after the storm for relief efforts. The island can never be fully restored and kept safe from ever intensifying storms.
Then when do you evacuate people from louisianna (under sea level), florida (from annual tornadoes), out west (mud slides and wildfires). I think the Federal Government should reevaluate insurance requirements for people that choose to be in certain areas.
