DORMONT, Pa.—Joshua Vish, at age 36, is the oldest lifeguard at the Dormont Pool. The job pays $15 an hour and is a dream come true, he said. Maybe even a life-saver.a national labor shortage,
and the pool of lifeguards is especially shallow. The closing of beaches and pools last year sent many lifeguards—and potential recruits—to find new work. The line of empty lifeguard chairs this summer stretches from Newport, R.I., to Redondo Beach, Calif. In May, officials in Dormont, a borough of about 8,600 residents outside Pittsburgh, had less than half of the 30 lifeguards needed to staff the century-old pool, which didn’t open last summer.
Borough officials voted to close the Dormont Pool on Mondays, reducing costs to allow lifeguards’ hourly pay to go to $15 from $9.25, said Bethany Bachman, the borough’s communications coordinator.
