It has been 52 years since the Maple Leafs raised the Stanley Cup in the hockey hotbed of Toronto. The Cup-less half-century is the longest active drought in the sport and second-longest all time behind the New York Rangers’ 54-year wait that ended in 1994. It is an eternity for Leafs fans, who most recently witnessed three straight first-round playoff exits after three years out of the postseason.
But Toronto is hoping a trio of stars will return the club to the promised land. The Leafs signed free agent John Tavares last year and extended the contracts of its own young studs, Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, in 2019. The deals produced the three highest salaries in the NHL this season, worth a combined $47.8 million. The salary cap figure, which uses the average salary over the contract, is a more reasonable $33.5 million but still represents 41% of the cap for the top-heavy roster.
While Toronto’s stars have the largest on-ice salaries, another Canadian player shoots to the head of the class when including endorsements. Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid will earn $18.5 million this season, including an estimated $4.5 million off the ice from endorsements and memorabilia. The tally makes him the NHL’s highest-paid player for theMcDavid has his own massive playing contract.
McDavid entered the NHL with lofty expectations as the number one overall pick and won the NHL’s MVP award in only his second season. Marketers gravitated to the 22-year-old, whose endorsement deals include CCM, Adidas, CIBC, BioSteel, Canadian Tire, Rogers Communications and Electronic Arts.
