The new Super Mario Bros. movie and its accompanying theme park are the very sort of soulless corporate enterprise the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie tried to warn us about.

. The central premise sees the two brothers square off against an AU Trump-esque villain, militaristic company man Koopa. Koopa holds a chokehold on the media, forbids protest music, and uses a private police force to keep people in check. Imagine theme park rules and regulations applied to a city—right down toMorton and Jankel frame this sort of tight governance, city planning, and media control as inherently villainous.

Translation? Less hyper-political Roland Joffe fever dreams from the Max Headroom team, more inherently corporate productions made to sell videogames. This is how Nintendo intends to further its own “magic” going into the new decade—“video clips” and theme parks that enhance the prospective value and mindshare of an intellectual property.

But this isn’t magic—quite the opposite. Since the 1960s, Disney has decimated vast swaths of Florida land in the name of “magic.” They have rewritten local laws and ordinances to destroy communities, filled swamps with concrete, and eradicated much of the regional wildlife. What has been done to the state of Florida over the past century is cartoon villainy done in the name of cartoon reality.

Everything from SeaWorld to Universal to every last fucking Fun Spot followed. Florida is now the place to go if you want to attend Hogwarts, ride a roller coaster that holds some silly record, or go watch a whale die slowly in a tank. And thanks in part tolikely immortalized in the Universal corporate canon—it will be one of the only places you can see plastic mushrooms and plastic trees from an old videogame.

is—promotion for an aging theme park governed by fascist state policy. Another concrete monstrosity supported by a drip feed of “memorable moments.” Cold, unfeeling gray where even the smallest mushroom is plucked before it can grow through the cracks.Madeline Blondeau is a Georgia-born, PNW-based editor, writer and podcaster. The film isn't even out yet. We haven't seen enough to make comparisons to the 1993 version What is 'soulless corporate branding' are actually attention to details that honors and respects the catalogue Mario games

A shame it ain’t April Fool’s day.

You're a clown mag.

Funny thing is that I have to agree with this as I expected something NEW with this movie and not the same old song and dance that I have seen tons of times in the various video games.

... could you kindly shut up?

What is wrong with you lol

Said paste magazine

You could've written something more important and you chose this.

[The scene starts with Mario and Luigi sitting in front of a computer screen, scrolling through Twitter.] Mario: Luigi, look at this tweet from PasteMagazine. Luigi: What did they say, Mario?

wrong

without mario we wouldn’t have games at all anymore theres no games that came out in 84 at all mario saved everything in 85

L magazine 😂 blocking this trash

What

critical analysis of dumb pop culture is so funny to me they will never be a real critic, so they're stuck philosophizing about fricking mario and the avengers

Fun facts with Keigo because nobody wants to listen to the OP: Did you know that the sound of rubs breaking sounds strikingly similar to the sound your knuckles make when cracked?

we don't talk about the 1993 movie. No no no.

grmartin Super Nintendo World is a “soulless corporate enterprise?” A roller coaster that “holds some silly record?” Well I never! (He said as he clutched his pearls.)

have you eaten paste and assumed that counts for journalism because nobody defends the 1993 movie bruh

You haven't seen the movie yet. Yet here you are saying crap about it and calling it souless, while defending the abomniation that was the 1993 movie all in the same breath......

lmfao you people are such crackheads

Baity rant

... I'm sorry, WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT?

...you named your magazine Paste..?

Movie ain't even out, and you're already complaining. I know senseless Nintendo Fanboys are annoying, but senseless Nintendo Haters are just as much.

Hate clicks…

Is your magazine just filled with articles about which paste taste the best? Because that's the only way this article makes sense.

Are you not a corporation yourself, something something glass house.

This article:

Random buzzwords = good point!

It’s going to be some woke bs I already know it. Don’t even release the movie

So what are you saying is A movie with zero accuracy and music and tried to do its own thing but failed. And the cast was mid and Mario was the best they could do:👍 A movie with video game music, 100% accuracy, actors are top notch (except Mario) and a great plot overall:👎 HUH?

……

God forbid Disney have some competition.

That's certainly words.

They aren't going to make the Last Of Us MarioKart from that skit and I'm sorry that those were your expectations.

shut up

What DID the 1993 movie warn us about? Please enlighten us. Oh, it warned us that a better, more accurate adaptation would come 30 years later? I suppose that's right...

This isn’t even a review, this is a rant piece before the film even came out I know this because the embargo doesn’t lift until Monday Who ever wrote this literally did not see the film

Look at this silly italian plumber guy. Truly the face of 'fascist capitalist monopolies' right here

Don't you ever mention that! It never happened!

Mf, HAVE YOU HEARD THE STORIES ABOUT THE '93 FILM'S PRODUCTION? MARIO AND LUIGI GOT DRUNK OFTEN, CONSTANT STORY CHANGES MARIO BROKE HIS FUCKING FINGER?

this is you

Bowser himself likes fun more than you

l=|_|(l \\'0|_|

Do you guys eat paste when you write these?

they're making a nsmb movie? sounds boring

to bring back the voice of Princess Toadstool the voice actor Jeannie Elias for Princess peach from the Super Mario Bros Super Show and to remember the Mario cartoon with the intro song and it took 30 years to have a drinkable and watchable film, say soulless, you're really crazy

Haters gonna hate

This you?

Is your magazine called 'Paste' because you ate glue paste in kindergarten?

Your tweet is soulless

Gooo 🖕🖕🖕🖕yourself ashole

The 93 movie really stunk

Erm...shur up? Smh.....

Honestly I'd take 1993's Dinohattan in a hot second that shit kicked ass

Get the absolute fuck outta here with that noise.

I Don't Know What To Say...

YouTubers like ClownfishTVcom DDayCobra EthanVanSciver TheQuartering and heelvsbabyface should cover this clickbait article that vhsvvitch wrote and called it 'fascist'.

more fake outrage bait. you got more engagement in this one article than you have with all your other articles combined. Congrats.

Bowser trying to slander Mario like:

Why are ALL these articles writers dead set on being lame ass versions of wrestling heels lol

This writer most have one of the saddest lives in human history. This is what to much privilege and comfort will do to you.

sorry mario fans, after the constant years of bashing sonic on the internet and trying to make it a cultural phenomenon, mario was sooner and later bound to take a huger L in due time and what do yo know! it was this movie

So Anime feminist/ Marxists 🤭 hate the new super mario movie because it is 'Capitalist' and somehow found meaning in this nonsense.

What are these life losers aggrieved about now? It’s a movie ffs

You are such a sad sack

The only soulless thing is this post and it’s writer

no. they are filled to the brim with charm, personality, love and effort.

I feel about this new Mario movie similarly to what I feel about the modern shape of superhero movies — it looks like the exact thing the fans want, which is the opposite of what adaptations are supposed to be. Hollywood movies have lost their luster.

Saddo

Based

'Fun Sucks' how very deep and insightful that a company owns a character

Excuse me accompanying theme park?

This is not the way to remind everyone of the Live Action 1993 cult classic Super Mario Bros staring Bob Hoskins and Jon Leguizamo.

smbmovie Oh god. This NAILS it.

If 'fun, colorful and game acurate' is 'corporate' to you, then I'm afraid you shouldn't be playing Mario games. Heck, you shouldn't be talking about Mario at all.

Over 200k followers and yet only 25 likes, you done goofed up

This you?

And?

HEY GUYS I FOUND ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE PURIST GUYS THAT...seem to be everywhere?

Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

journalism moment

Fun fact: you can smell my anus

L

Admin go tell Madeline Blondeau that she's very boring

Imagine having a life this sad you literally have to try to drag down people who enjoy things
