Since the 2007 premiere of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” the Kardashian-Jenner family has redefined reality TV — and the nature of celebrity itself. Hot off the success of “American Idol,” Ryan Seacrest signed a deal with E! in 2006 to host the channel’s red-carpet awards coverage and produce series through his Ryan Seacrest Productions shingle.It was something that my mentor, Merv Griffin, said to me. “Hey, if you’re ever in a position to trade your services with a production component, you should really think about that.” So, using his blueprint, that’s what we did.
