Neil Burger, director of The Marsh King's Daughter, discusses stars Daisy Ridley and Ben Mendelsohn performances as well as filming in the wilderness

Summary The Marsh King's Daughter follows Helena as she faces the darkness of her past. When her estranged father breaks out of prison, Helena is worried that he will target her and her family. In an effort to stop him, she uses the very skills that he taught her to survive in the wild and confront The Marsh King.

Neil Burger: Well, The Marsh King's Daughter is based on a bestselling book, and then it was adapted, actually, into a screenplay by Mark Smith, who wrote The Revenant, and Elle Smith, his daughter, which is great because it's a father-daughter story adapted by a father and daughter. So it came to me, and I had been looking to make a movie that was set in nature, where the wilderness and the natural world almost would be a character in the movie.

Neil Burger: Yeah, well, so we would have days where we were shooting... In one place, one of the most remote places was on a First Nations reservation, the Dokis Reserve up in, kind of about four hours north of Toronto. And they were very generous to let us shoot there, and we're very thankful to that.

Neil Burger: Yeah, well, it does, it's very much about, in a certain way, it's very much about families and about parenting and where we come from and how that imprints on us. And are we then stuck with that legacy or can we change, can we free ourselves from, in this case, the traumas of the past and become our true self? And so that's a theme that's very interesting to me.

Oh, absolutely. In the beginning where they have that emotional beat where she's being pulled onto the ATP, my heart broke for her. But then the more you find out about Ben's Jacob, the more terrifying he becomes. Now, The March King's Daughter has elements of psychological thriller and family drama. Can you talk about balancing those different genres?
