A24’s July horror picwritten and directed by Ari Aster, ran 147 minutes and has earned $27 million to date, compared to the 127-minute runtime of the filmmaker’s 2018 horrorAnd then there’s the return of auteur Quentin Tarantino, this time pairing Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in. With an impressive running time of 161 minutes, the Sony Pictures flick has earned $310 million to date globally, and will soon pass up Tarantino’sDjango Unchainedran 153 minutes.
Box office analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations doesn’t believe a movie’s length is a factor in its box-office performance. "Longform is fine as long as you can justify it," he says. "There’s no magic number," adds former Fox distribution chief Chris Aronson. "If a movie is more than 2:20 [140 minutes], it will likely cost you a showtime per screen. But if the director’s vision is beautiful and dynamic, then it doesn’t matter."
Disney — which commands more than 44 percent of global marketshare so far this year — isn’t afraid to go past the two-hour mark for its live-action fare, particularly when it comes to Marvel’s superhero movies. Among titles from Disney Studios proper, Guy Ritchie’s live-actionThe Lion King— the trend for longer runtimes isn’t showing signs of slowing down as Hollywood gears up for a fall slate stacked with supersized awards-worthy offerings.
In fact, a slew of awards contenders run well past two hours, including Bong Joon-ho’s acclaimed black horror-comedy that stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver as a couple going through a harrowing breakup, Destin Daniel Cretton’s civil rights legal dramaFord v. FerrariIn recent times, the average length of an Oscar best picture nominee has hovered around the two-hour mark. Now, that average is on the rise.
If it’s good why would anyone have a problem with a longer run time?
I’m going to quote Roger Ebert: “No good movie is too long, and no bad movie is short enough.”
BenMulroney Long run time isn't new. Gone with the Wind, Seven Samurai, Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-Hur, Spartacus, Once Upon a Time in America, Titanic, and Schindler's List are all over 3 hours and from before the 2000's. Be better at journalism.
The length is only a problem because there is no intermission.
BenMulroney Some of the epic old movies had intermissions. Wonder if they should bring that back.
I love this. Longer movies allow the director to express exactly what he wants without some executive and editor leaving 30 minutes on the floor.
I love my long movies. It feels like you're getting bang for your buck at the cinema. Hollywood should take note. What movies have had the biggest box office? Endgame: 3h 2m hours Avatar: 2h 42m Titanic: 3h 15m Audiences love a long movie. FilmTwitter
A super-sized movie became the highest grossing film of all time only a few months ago. Hardly a sign of impatience
You should use as much time as it takes to tell the story properly, no more, no less. If the movie needs to be 1.5 hours to tell the story, fine. If it needs to be 4 hours to tell the story, fine. Just tell a GOOD story. Audiences won't care so long as it's good.
Soars? Who wrote the headline...
It’s almost like they’re getting longer. 🤔
The problem isn’t that movies are too long... it’s the full half hour of previews and nonsense before they begin.
Following the successful path of major league baseball
The year is 2035, the average summer movie running time is 142 minutes, everything is a reboot from 2016
Poor audiences and their attention span.
Soars !!
Any movie over 100 minutes is a book and books are for nerds.
Your last sentence danced up to big issue & stopped:“You want people to have a good experience.' Mustn’t accuse theater OWNERS! BUT how the theater’s run=my biggest gripe. Short runtimes or elaborate concessions aren’t why I’d come back—commit to no phones lighting up in my face.
I think people forget that films with a lot of buzz and anticipation will have its sequel finding a hard time equaling that opening once that anticipation goes down somewhat. The signs were there from the box office analysts that IT Chapter 2 was not going to open as well.
Most people barely even have an attention span that last more than 30 seconds. If a movie is engaging and can keep it's story moving and it's paced well than those 2.5-3 hrs go by quick.
Long boring movies are testing the patience of audiences. If the movie is entertaining and engaging then you simply don’t notice the runtime. But if the movie is inconsistent or unnecessarily bloated then it becomes painfully obvious that it’s a 3 hr film.
I like long movies if theyre good
Halloween's coming up. Bring back the fun-size movie.
