U.K. Conservative Party legislator Nick Boles says he is quitting the party after one of his Brexit proposals was voted down.
Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay says that May’s deal is the only way forward in light of Parliament’s inability to find a clear majority for an alternative arrangement. Britain is due to leave the EU on April 12 without an agreement unless it passes a divorce deal or secures an extension from the bloc.British lawmakers have started voting on four alternatives to the government’s thrice-rejected Brexit deal.
The options up for votes Monday night in Parliament include two proposals that aim to retain close economic ties between Britain and the European Union. One would keep the U.K. in a customs union for goods with the EU after Brexit, while another calls for Britain to stay in the bloc’s single market for both goods and services.
Parliament is set to vote Monday on several alternatives to the European Union withdrawal deal proposed by Prime Minister Theresa May. Britain either has to leave the EU on April 12 or come up with an alternative plan, which — unless it decides to revoke Brexit — is likely to involve delaying its withdrawal from the bloc well beyond the May 23-26 European Parliament vote.
EasyJet says its first half loss of 275 million pounds was within expectations, but the outlook for the six months through September is “more cautious” because of “softness in ticket yields in the U.K. and across Europe.”
