A French court says Cardinal Philippe Barbarin “had the obligation to report” accusations against a pedophile priest because the alleged victims didn’t request secrecy.
“Henceforth, Barbarin had the obligation to report these facts. He didn’t take the initiative despite Hezez’s request and insistence,” the court writes. The Vatican did, however, invoke diplomatic immunity in refusing to respond to related cover-up allegations against Cardinal Luis Ladaria, the head of its doctrine office. If the church had been reporting violations to the authorities from the beginning people would have more trust in them as a whole. Instead the church comes out looking like they're part of the problem.
These guys obviously feel it is a greater sin to allow the image of the Church to be damaged than it is to protect their flock.
If the Catholic Church was serious about protecting children, they would do whatever they can to cooperate with French Authorities. But they are not. Last months meeting of bishops was just for show.
