Summary The Last of Us was already one of HBO’s best shows of the year judging by audience and critic reactions, but its status has been cemented by a jury of its peers. The show has been nominated for 24 Emmy Awards and was surpassed only by another HBO show in Succession, which received 27 nods.
The nomination is specifically for episode three, [where] you're doing so much work around aging and time passing. I'm curious. I think you developed wigs to go through the aging process; how much of the actual hair of Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett were you using? Or were you just totally covering it?
Then, as he ages, we got rid of some of those wefts and started using a little bit more of his own gray. Then, as he got even older, we added so much more gray into his hair by airbrushing and, again, using the dental brush and painting everything out. And then [we really used] his receding hairline, and then pulled that back even a bit more so that we could really give them that aged and sickly look.
Chris Glimsdale: You really have to go deeply into it, because if you don't, then you don't really create each person's character. For example, with the Fireflies, they have just a little bit more, but there's no hair product at this time. None of that's being made anymore, so it all has to be very natural-looking. You also have to take into consideration whether there's running water, [and] what they have around them.
Chris Glimsdale: Normally, it's actually easier to mess up their own hair. We really made sure we went through all the background [actors] and everybody to make sure they didn't have fresh hair colors, [or] they didn't have highlights, for example. Unless it looked sun-kissed, because that was doable. But [the characters] didn't have hair colors, so they didn't have regrowth, they didn't have rooted gray hair and then dark hair.
Then, when they laid the prosthetic pieces on top and we laid our hair in, we just made sure that everything was put in the right direction. [It was] not always facing forward, [but] sometimes facing backwards depending on their movement. It would just be a whole bunch of reconsidering, and sometimes you actually do have to fix it after they've done their stunts, because things don't always stay.
