The IRS sent more than $1 billion in stimulus checks to dead people

The Internal Revenue Service sent out 1.1 million stimulus checks to dead people totaling $1.4 billion, according to a new report from a government watchdog agency.

The IRS used those 2013 recommendations to create a process where it used death records to update taxpayer accounts. If a person had a 2018 return, but died, the IRS — without reliance on death records — wouldn’t have a way to know if the recipient was alive. The IRS outlined a process on how to remit payment. The instructions, however, don’t discuss consequences if people do not send the money back.

Again. I know foreigners who received checks. They worked in the US in 2019 and paid taxes. They have since moved back to Europe.

If the IRS can’t track the deaths of taxpayers, how can the US government track the votes of dead voters.

My brother who passed away received his before anyone else in our family.

Got one with my late father's name (and mine). Sent it back. He was an honorable man and I did what he'd want me to do.

At least now they'll be able to afford to take the day off so they can vote.
