The Oakland Health Disparities Project asked if the race of a physician made a difference in patient health outcomes.Though Black Americans make up 13% of the U.S. population, they represent only 5% of physicians.
Dr. Garrick Owen, the CEO and President of Bridge Clinical Research, wanted to know. He set out to investigate — through a clinical study — if the race of the doctor mattered in successfully encouraging Black patients to take advantage of preventative healthcare services, like cholesterol and diabetes screenings.
Today on the show, Short Wave host Maddie Sofia and reporter Emily Kwong talk about the implications of his study,"Does Diversity Matter? Experimental Evidence from Oakland," and the importance of diversity in medicine for improving the health of communities of color.

Asians make up 5.6% of the population but represent 17% of doctors. White people make up 76% of the population but 56% of doctors.
It's half that for Architects. And only .2% are black women. Many professional fields have a very long way to go for equitable representation. All voices need to be at the table
Next you’re going to say that we have overrepresentation of Indian American doctors, so they need to go. C’mon NPR, give the racial distress a rest for like, two minutes.
To become a doctor, you had to first qualify yourself by first showing academic achievement, then you were required to enroll in medical school, then off to a residency program, then take your board exams and pass. Your race is irrelevant. We want qualified docs, not quotas.
I must be doomed then cause I never see a white doctor
We know the main objective of the media( NPR ) is creating division, this article is the perfect example. A non- story...
Now do Asian
There should be no negative impact. A human body is a human body. Even if Blacks have unique challenges, medical research has uncovered and idendified them well enough to treat them. Or? Do Blacks make regular doctor visits to stave off disease?
Are you sure they are only 13 percent of the population. From watching news I get impression they are 75 %.
NPR, you are supposed to be impartial and report equally on people of any background within our society. You are blatantly obsessed with black people and you are not even hiding it.
In a turn of statistics, my doctor is Black and I'm white as could be. You all should try it.
extra That starts with education and licensing.
Why does NPR hate White America? Trump Supporters? NPR should be shut down.
It all depends. My Primary Physician is from India. M GYNECOLOGIST is white. Both treat me VERY WELL. Both I have the Ultimate Respect for.
Great news! Let’s create African American reservations where blacks can prosper free from the white gaze.
Jews make up 2% of the population and make up 50% of the USA's billionaires.. weird
Systemic racism is to blame........either that or the lack of interest blacks historically have in medical and STEM programs.🙄
If education were free and available to colored folk in the US, this wouldn't happen. Instead you outsource.
And que the gaslighters. Thanks for the info, though.
Pretty much doesn't Doctor is a doctor is a doctor
This is so racist. Why does skin tone effect the quality of care?
Numbers can be manipulated to serve ones agenda. What is the % of whites in India, what % are white doctors? Same in Nigeria, Sudan, China, Japan & Philippians! How does that impact white patients' health and well-beaning in those countries? numbers OK, meets my agenda!
Now do Asians...
Gay folks often get better care see a gay Dr but not always. It still depends on the character of the Dr.
A lot of diversity talk but little abt high poverty rates, failing public edu, & low college graduation rates in the blk community. These factors may result in a lack of diversity. We need a more robust pool of blk candidates but that can’t be so if we don’t address major issues.
Yea but y’all hate SecretaryCarson ?
Ez short term fix get rid of limits on doctors in the US.
Only 50% or dr are white and they make up over 60% of American pop.
Maybe if the Thug Life wasn't so glamorous then we would have more black doctors. It's not like anyone's keeping them from it.
This is the dumbest thing you have ever said! I always go to the best doctor! I never know what color they may be until I get there. 🤷🏼♂️
We need less Asian dr. They are only 5% of the pop and make up 17% if all dr in the USA
Thank you for this article. I'm a black male and I've had racist experiences with doctors in the past. My own personal experience with black male doctors is that they do tend to see you as a person and don't wag their finger in your face and talk down to you.
Doctors treat people, NOT race, religion or creed! Any claim or insinuation that they do any differently is strictly POLITICS and HARMFUL! Doctors take an oath to help and not harm! That means everyone without exception! ALL people MAKE A CHOICE to see a doctor or not!

Keeps many of them from dying from medical errors, the 3rd leading cause of Death in America.
As long as person had a M.D. next to their name I could less what color they are
Separate but equal?
By this logic, as a white man, I should ensure I only see white doctors, and avoid any/all black professionals. Message received.
I suspect that may be true as well for women's healthcare and female physicians.
Education needs to be free and accessible to everyone.
Stupidest thing I heard today so far. Every one will get a better outcome by seeing a doctor vs not seeing one. Regardless of doctor’s skin color.
keep on talking in ‘black and white’, guys and nothing will change 👍🏻
Is it just me or does anyone else thing we’re heading back to a segregated society?
