ParentsThe secret to charter schools' success is the parents. “Is it really such a bad thing that this is basically an elite private school that admits by lottery?” Isn’t the key word in this whole thing “private”, so, doesn’t the entire story begin and end right there? It’s a no brainer for parents. We’ll try to get our kids into the best schools possible. The trouble is that the standard public education is atrocious, so you need to get into a “better” public school or provide the education yourself (not possible for most working folks). With rare exceptions, the key to *any* student's learning is parents. Without parental support, 'success' (as measured by test scores) generally doesn't happen. What you're endorsing is segregation of students w/ highly-involved parents - then crowing about 'school success.'
