She and her husband lost their jobs and home, their small business folded, multiple relatives died and health crises pushed them into medical debt."Food was really, really, really tight.

that included decreasing obesity and diet-related disease — such as diabetes — through healthier eating, good nutrition and physical activity. The private sector and charities have committed eight billion dollars. But a divided Congress could set back some of the Biden administration's broader proposals that could help lift people like Heather out of poverty.Thomas, 47, was not always on this side of the poverty line.

"Both my husband and I are college educated. My husband is an honorably discharged combat vet. And we've always worked since we were teenagers. I've worked in social services, in the human services field for over 30 years. And my husband served the military. And then when he got out, he's worked in different jobs," she said."This could happen to anybody.

"Living in poverty makes you sicker or causes you to become sick if you aren't and it's hard to get out of," Thomas said."No matter how long you live in it, it causes trauma," she added, noting the stress caused her and her husband to develop PTSD, bringing her lupus and rheumatoid arthritis out of remission. The trauma in turn trickled down to the children, whose health has also"gone downhill.

Beans and rice are extremely affordable, but little kids want nuggets

Terrible

In the meantime NPR ignores the high cost of food due to Biden’s inflation.

Give more money to Ukraine it will fix this problem.

But they have to have iPhones...

Ya know what's interesting about this? I work with food insecure people....and when offered free food options, I am mostly told that they 'don't like that food.' So just how 'insecure' are they?

This is a disgrace.

Tell POTUS this should never happen when we give billions of dollars to foreign nations. Food security for our children should be a top priority In 2021, the United States budgeted $38 billion for foreign aid spending. As of this reporting, it has disbursed over $32 billion

Not how NPR just had to highlight Obesity. Not one word here though about the food monopolies, big box stores and fast food restaurants on every corner. Nothing about rural areas where dollar stores make it unprofitable to sell fresh vegetables, a 30 mile drive for a vegetable

Republicans want people to be hungry and weak for them to not have enough strength to leave their homes and vote in November.

How many of these from Mississippi Mr Favre?

'Food insecure'

olivia_hampton Yes, elections have these consequences. Unfortunately NPR won’t report on the “WHY”.

Meanwhile instead of expanding SNAP, Medicaid and building more public housing - we send billions to Ukraine. 🥴

It's not like there's a lack of food production in the US, is there?

And yet, we must send billions out of the country.

The saddest part is that it’s our middle class working families that are struggling for all of our essential needs Food Clothing and Shelter! All at risk. Working families are being charged so much it’s actually beneficial for them just staying home collecting welfare

here come all the boot lickers talking about how they just need to work harder despite working the hardest jobs.

And Democrats are sending billions to Ukraine & spending hundreds of millions to care & house illegal immigrants. America & Americans last is the Democrat motto. DemocratsHateAmerica

It’s a memory that’s hard to forget

Who cares give more money to Ukraine!

Let’s ask the question..where does all that charity money go.does it trickle up first and what is leftover goes to the needycharity CEO’s make millions a year..hunger happens when you rely on government..

Elections have consequences

The Plantation runs on cheap labor.

We haven't seen anything yet...

Maybe more money to the Ukraine will help?
