Michelle Mann “Our mission is to be the hands and feet of Jesus,” said Derrick Tiller as he walked through The Harbor building, each room filled with what he calls “in-the-trenches ministry” ranging from feeding the hungry to “wonderful Wednesday volunteers” stocking the clothes closet to Wednesday morning Bible study.
The Harbor strives to empower people with the training, social support, education, and work experience they need to overcome obstacles, empowering them to build a better life for themselves and their families. “I’ve always been around nonprofits,” Tiller said with a smile. “At first, I swore I would never get into nonprofits, but God had other plans and I said, 'OK, Lord, I submit to your will'.
There are a variety of ways the community can help serve, Tiller said. Donations of clothing and nonperishable food items, especially items in pop-top ready-to-eat can are always appreciated. “If you want to get into the trenches with us, you can do the outreach on Saturday mornings when we are the busiest doing the hot breakfast and distributing the free food hygiene items.
