—regardless of whether they will be constructed specifically for the film or sourced from existing archives. “I feel like it makes the film feel more of itself, rather than borrowed from somewhere else,” she says. “Even when I do contemporary movies, I always draw first, and then sometimes you find the perfect thing that already exists. But I feel like that way I get to know who the character is a little bit more, and I can communicate that better with the rest of the creative team.

Given that Turzanska shot the film more than two years ago—with the film’s initial release delayed by COVID-19—what does she remember of working out in the wet, windy outdoor environments captured so beautifully on the screen? “I have to say, I didn’t realize how cold and wet it was going to be,” she admits. “Dev was out in the elements, constantly wet, covered in mud.
