Review: “The Gray Man,” which marks the end of Ryan Gosling's four-year disappearing act, is a big, loud fun.

Playing the most insouciant action hero since Sean Connery last ordered a martini, Ryan Gosling marks the end of a four-year disappearing act with “The Gray Man,” his first feature since the underappreciated “First Man” of 2018. Goslingites are eager; fans of the Russo brothers are agog; Netflix is on eggshells waiting to see whether spending an alleged $200 million to destroy Prague will lift it out of the doldrums. There’s a lot happening here.

This includes the movie, incidentally, an overcooked pastiche of plot devices from thrillers past, but done with such extreme and deliberate style that one wonders right away whether the entire project is a parody of the action thriller as it’s evolved since the advent of the videogame. There is shooting, martial arts and torture, gratuitous and otherwise.
