Did you ever consider making an original film about the stunt world that wasn’t explicitly based on the show? Are you heartened that stunt performers are starting to receive more recognition, as evidenced by growing chatter about a stunt-related Oscar, and by the fact that Chris O’Hara, on this film, received the first-ever “stunt designer” credit?
We had many conversations about that opening oner with the descender. You know when you’re in a situation, you start to rationalize and negotiate, and there’s all those levels of trying to get out of a torture—there’s denial, there’s negotiation, etc. He’s like, we can use green screen and we can do this, and I’m like, we can’t do any of that. You need to feel this. He said, you’re right, I do. I need to feel this experience at least once in this movie.
It’s kind of the latter, because they’re so big. You’re casting your net, sending them a draft and saying, you want to do this? Ryan signed on before the script; he was part of the package that we were going to make this together. But to get Emily, we had a first draft, and Kelly had this brilliant idea before we sent it to her that we needed to up the stakes for her character. We changed her from a make-up artist to a director.
