The holidays may be bizarre this year, but all the more reason to spread the tinned fish and chili crisp

The holidays are going to be bizarre this year, overshadowed by a pandemic, wildfires, civil rights protests, and bitterly contentious election. But all the more reason to spread a little holiday cheer, in whatever kind of package sparks some small joy. Food gifts are one of the most wonderful ways to feed family and friends near and far, with everything from tinned fish to chili crisp, cookies and confections to belly-warming whiskey.

And there has never been a better time to support small businesses, who are getting creative and throwing in cozy sweatshirts and comforting mugs, not to mention beautiful ceramics and sharp knives for setting out dinners at home.The sign for House of Nanking, that classic Chinese spot on the border of Chinatown and North Beach, is so graphically pleasing that it’s kind of wild that it took until 2020 for the place to start offering official Nanking merch.
