If the sun is shining, get yourself to a beautiful patio in Fort Worth.

These beauties are bacon burnt ends, one of the most popular items at Heim Barbecue.

We’re pretty sure barbecue was made to be eaten on picnic tables. And that’s what you’ll find in the backyard of Heim Barbecue. The bacon burnt ends are a must order. Then, choose your own adventure: a brisket plate with two sides? A jalapeño-cheddar sausage corn dog? A double cheeseburger? All are good.

Heim Barbecue “River” is at 5333 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth. Unlike many of the restaurants on this list, Heim opens for breakfast six days a week, for tacos and biscuit sandwiches. When Joe T. Garcia’s family opened a restaurant in Fort Worth 87 years ago, payments were made on the honor system and customers weren’t given menus. after Reata’s 20-year lease is up. Will the new restaurant have a handsome rooftop patio like the original does? We sure hope so.Fort Worth’s Reata Restaurant is leaving Sundance Square after 20 yearsIn your backyard, you serve 16-hour smoked beef shin with ricotta, borracho beans and kale salad, right? Well, we don't. That's why dinner at Woodshed Smokehouse in Fort Worth is so great.

More than any other restaurant on this list, the menu at Woodshed Smokehouse is perfectly designed for patio eating. There are a dozen snacks — stuff that somebody might make for their own backyard barbecue, but cheffed up. Then there’s barbecue, served in sandwiches, tacos and straight-up. And finally there’s a “dining with friends” section. For $98, a group can share the Texas Trinity: sausage of the day, pork ribs and brisket, served with pickles, potato salad, borracho beans and bread.
