In a display of discontent not seen in Cuba for perhaps six decades, people of all ages chanted and marched, some of them to the tune of clanging spoons and frying pans

ON JULY 11TH thousands of protesters took to the streets spontaneously in more than 50 Cuban towns and cities. They had a long litany of grievances: recurring electricity shortages, empty grocery shops, a failing economy, a repressive government and an increasingly desperate situation regarding covid-19. In a display of discontent not seen on the communist island for perhaps six decades, people of all ages chanted and marched, some of them to the tune of clanging spoons and frying pans.

The big question is how much staying power the protests will have. The coming days will show whether the regime's stock response of swatting down any signs of dissent will work again. The government has little leeway to buy social peace. Cuba has been badly hit by covid-19 and by a precipitous drop in tourism, on which it is heavily dependent. A lack of foreign currency with which to buy imports has led to acute food shortages and blackouts.

The Cuban economy came close to collapse in the early 1990s, after the fall of the Soviet Union brought foreign aid to an abrupt halt. There were public protests then, too, which were quickly dispersed. But Cubans now have access to the internet and are adept at using it to mobilise. Videos of police violence and arbitrary arrests have been circulating rapidly in recent days.

This is getting pushed alot. Globalists want Cuba. Best to leave them alone and focus on the loss of freedoms at home.

Prediction: Major Cuban coronavirus outbreak, followed shortly by huge mass cremations.

Trump murdered an American protester and openly boasted about it. BLM protesters are routinely arrested and charge them with Felony violence when the leaders are innocent.

Cuban president defiant, blames embargo after protestsA defiant Cuban president lashed out at the U.S. embargo against Cuba on Monday in response to rare protests across the country over the lack of food, fuel, medicine and other goods during the pandemic. The Cuban government is responsible for its people. The Cuban government is more interested in using its peoples scarce resources to build luxury hotels where Cuban people ironically cannot afford to be. Their government is totally corrupt - I wish the people of Cuba freedom. I don’t understand how the US was able to keep Guantanamo Bay for 120 years. It makes no sense that they have this strict embargo on this country but they still have a prison in the country. Take the embargo off and the American tourists will have influence on the country socialism / communism is MISERY.

Miami demonstrators block highway to support Cuban protestsA major South Florida expressway was shut down in both directions as a group of demonstrators took to the streets in solidarity with Cubans who waged a weekend of protests. What exactly will this accomplish? Does anyone really believe that stopping traffic in FLORIDA will have an impact in CUBA Didn't FFlorida JUST pass a law against this kind of thing? I guess it's different when it's Black people, huh? Masky_Jay_Hoody Wonder if the former guy would just have them shot? 🤔 Got to dominate the streets you know.

Miami demonstrators block highway to support Cuban protestsMIAMI (AP) — Demonstrators expressing solidarity with the thousands of Cubans who waged a rare weekend of protests around their island nation shut down a stretch of a major South Florida expressway Tuesday. They’re protesting Communism! Another proof that human governments do not care about people but power. Worst of all, it's people's insistence in putting their trust in them. People want these governments to carry on their repression. They are still butthurt Castro took away their slaves. Boohoo. Newsflash: Cubans are protesting the US embargo, not their own government. They are flying the flag of the revolution.

Lively leader of Cuban American community among Fla. victimsA Bay of Pigs veteran and leader of Miami's Cuban American community is among the casualties in the Florida condo building collapse. Juan Mora was one of hundreds of Cuban exiles who took part in a CIA-funded operation to overthrow Fidel Castro in 1961. Good Seems like a thing you'd want to distance yourself from. I guess that would make him a failed terrorist then. Language matters. ManufacturingConsent AJEnglish telesurenglish Cuba
