Because of staffing issues, rural law enforcement depends heavily on volunteers to be able to have a broad search and rescue effort.Enterprise Police was awarded $45,000 by the State Department of Homeland Security to start a full-time unit, which will include reserve officers and technology that will be useful during overnight search efforts.
Enterprise Police Captain Billy Haglund knows firsthand how many seconds count during missing persons searches. “Essentially, it was everyone who was at work, especially if it was a missing child, everyone would drop what they were doing and they would go and search for the child,” Haglund said. For example, the search for 4-year-old Phenix Wilkerson saw hundreds of volunteers.“The Sheriff’s Office needed people on call to help with searches. Obviously, the Sheriff’s Office does not have enough people so we get called in to help,” Nancy Stephen, an equipment sergeant for the Mounted Posse, said.
