Opinion | HayesBrown: The reported behavior of the alleged gunman is a type of dehumanization that we see all too often in the context of people killing women for being women. So isn’t it time to change the way Americans talk about this category of crime?

, sex and gender are both considered protected categories under Georgia’s recently passed hate crimes statute. But the Georgia law only enables potential additional punishment at sentencing once a defendant is convicted of a felony or misdemeanor.protections for LGBTQ survivors of domestic abuse

and closing a loophole that let dating partners convicted of domestic violence still acquire firearms — as far as we know, none of the measures would have covered the suspect’s actions. So, should the U.S. follow in Latin America’s footsteps and criminalize femicide specifically? There are definitely arguments to be made against that move.

When sex and gender play a large part in the motivation of a woman’s murder, we should have a common way to refer to it., Congress should add a clause that requires states to provide statistics on women’s deaths at the hands of men to the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. Before we can address the issue, we need to know the scope of the problem. As it stands, we’re flying blind in the U.S.

last year. “The leaders of these worldwide uprisings were often regular people who lost sisters, mothers, daughters or best friends,” McHugh wrote. “They have now transformed their lives to fight femicide. It’s time for the United States to do the same.”

HayesBrown That is the problem: 'killing a woman for being a woman'. How you will define the person was murdered because she was woman? This could be strongly subjective. I guess there are more clever ways to punish well these types of crimes.

HayesBrown Sigh. The identity obsession just never ends. Who cares how you classify it This pedantic nonsense does no good. How about focusing on how our culture can be more focused on family/community so this kid had less chance to lash out before being taken in. The society is bereft

HayesBrown Wait... I thought 'gender' was nothing more than a social construct, man?

HayesBrown There is no case. Humans kill other humans. From the dawn of time to now. The human DNA to kill hasn't changed. Stop trying to put a label on everything. People are killed every day. It will continue.

HayesBrown Femicide refers to females, not all women are female, you transphobes

HayesBrown Yeah, sure, instead of fixing society, one has to invent a fitting term to be able to drown the efforts in language. As the leading country in all dimensions to think of, that is the minimum to achieve.

HayesBrown Honestly yes, the more acronyms and different charges, the less people pay attention. In my opinion get mad but reach a consensus. Occupy wall street never took off either, you need leaders. There's nothing wrong with Democracy.

HayesBrown Since the time of Adam and Eve (probably longer) men have blamed their bad behavior on women. Seven thousand years of patriarchy has allowed the subjugation, torture, and killing of women to happen without consequences. Time's UP.

HayesBrown Sounds good, about time. While your at it, please explain why a multitude of women murder their own children! Are they killing kids for being kids? Sounds dehumanizing to the extreme to me.

HayesBrown I don't know, haven't heard of many cases of men killing women because they are women 🤔
