The diffuser is a chunk of bodywork low on a car’s rear end, usually shaped to manage airflow, improve aerodynamics, and—let’s be honest—look bitchin’. Bugatti ’s new Tourbillon super-coupe’s massive diffuser certainly accomplishes all of the above, but it does a lot more—so much, in fact, that Bugatti director of design Frank Heyl holds a patent on it. It’s a brilliant example of how smart, no-holds-barred engineering can make one part of a car do the job of many.
The purpose of the Tourbillon’s aerodynamic package is not to create massive amounts of downforce, but to cancel out the lifting effect of the body and make the Tourbillon car aerodynamically neutral at speeds in excess of 250 mph. The sophisticated shape of the diffuser and the bodywork means no massive spoiler or wing is needed, just a tiny flip-up at the trailing edge of the bodywork.it reduces tire wear.
