on Amazon Prime Video today with its switch to week-to-week after a three-hour premiere. And this episode, as the series always tries to top itself, is probably one of the grossest to date. Yes, in terms of gore, but mainly in terms of Homelander going fully off the sadism leash in a way we have not seen before. And it’s drawn a series-best performance out of Antony Starr as a result.
I am not saying “gross” as an insult here but it’s…really gross! Namely I’m referring to a sequence where Homelander forces one of his old scientist captors to attempt to masturbate in front of a room of his colleagues, threating him with laser castration if he can’t do so. He can’t do so. He gets laser castrated. And yes, laser castration does tend to kill you.
The entire point of this Homelander storyline in episode 4 was him dealing with his past in the most violent way possible, perhaps drawing some level of sympathy as he recounts how he was tortured and psychologically manipulated to test his power and make him subservient, but the end result is…somewhat hard to justify. He burns a man alive in the oven. There’s the laser crotch blast.
