For a man who was so enraged at the administration of Barack Obama that he spent his 2012 Republican Convention speech lecturing an empty chair, Clint Eastwood has made a number of conventional, le…

The sexual liaison between them is treated as her half of a quid pro quo; in return, Shaw passes on the tip that Jewell is the suspect the FBI is investigating. Scruggs writes a story saying just that, which turns Jewell into a global news event.

, a hard-nosed, flamboyant fixture of the AJC newsroom who had an edgy side to her . But her integrity as a reporter was highly respected.Billy Ray, the screenwriter of “Richard Jewell,” and Warner Bros., the studio distributing it, have defended the movie by taking a page from the current political moment. They’ve doubled down on their misrepresentation, attacking their accusers without addressing, in any detail, the falsehood that they’re accused of telling. The Warner Bros.

On the level of awards-season politics, one can understand why the studio behind “Richard Jewell,” and the people who made the film, would want to deflect attention away from how Kathy Scruggs is portrayed.

OwenGleiberman The big variety lie about a “lie.” This column is why the movie exists and why it will do so well :) on over to Hollywood reporter, where actual writers work 👌

McClain_on_NFL OwenGleiberman MSM gotta defend themselves here...

OwenGleiberman Yeah, the FBI and MSM aren't corrupt at all. LOL

OwenGleiberman What are you living under a rock the last few years. Get a clue.

OwenGleiberman Who wrote this crap.

OwenGleiberman A shocker, a leftist jewish journalist has a problem with a director exposing leftist bias

OwenGleiberman Cringe

OwenGleiberman ya, they only ruined a man's life.

OwenGleiberman Nothing disturbing about the truth

OwenGleiberman This isn’t about you, you ghouls. This is about a HERO whose life was destroyed and, ultimately, ended by a rush to judgment by the media and law enforcement. Get over your goddamned selves.

OwenGleiberman They ruined an innocent man’s, nay, a hero’s life. Unfortunately, instead of being a lamented lesson learned, Richard Jewell was a window to the future, to now. Opinion, bias & activism have replaced journalism.

OwenGleiberman Clint Eastwood movie. Old stories. Yawn.

OwenGleiberman And the endless hounding of Jewell by the media and authorities led to his early death. Imagine how he felt while being slandered and libeled by a biased media for the crime of being 'a loser.'

OwenGleiberman Oooh Variety is mad that dramatic license was used.

OwenGleiberman That movie was ABSOLUTELY an accurate portrayal of law enforcement in America.

What a joke magazine this must be. Horribly biased article. Trump? Really?

What about that big lie who ruined Richard's life? you are killing this man again.

You are right about projection, yet have it reversed. The isolation that exists causes a complete lack of connection, while the outrage that fell on Jewell is undermined. This sad blip will, eventually, die out, thankfully.

Reading a hit piece defending how an innocent man's life was intentionally destroyed for media profit discredits itself by saying the movie tells 'a bigger symbolic lie: that the media and the government are in bed with each other.' Something repeatedly proven true since Kennedy

so what? it's a movie, right? *checks notes* yes, it's a movie.

“I don’t like movie because Orange Man Bad”.

BULL !

Nonsense and disappointing from

The first paragraph is about politics? I thought this was an honest discussion of a movie. *yawn'

It’s called “taking dramatic license”. That’s why I never put too much stock in the accuracy of biographies, autobiographies, docu-dramas. Even documentaries have omitted events and/or facts that I clearly remember happening. It’s a given that they won’t be a faithful re-telling.

Agreed, the FBI would never falsify evidence, use it to obtain illegal warrants, and leak Fake evidence to their partners, CNN, to feed an idealogical narrative, while destroying innocent people. Right carterwpage?

If this minor plot-point is what you are focusing on, then don’t bother. Richard Jewell is the victim here. They- the media and the government- ruined and then ended his life through their gross, self-important negligence. Shame on you.

This is great, OwenGleiberman, but there's more to be angry about. The script lies about something else important: giving credit to a Jewell lawyer for a case break an AJC reporter actually made.

Because ALL law enforcement officials are good people, right

If you have to use a lie to make your point, you’ve already lost the argument Clint.

Hard not to see this movie thru the prism of Trumpism. I cant see this movie being a box office success, not bcuz of Trump but bcuz it's just not a compelling story. I'm actually surprised WB made this film. Guess they really wanted to continue the relationship with Clint.

I've been wanting to use it so bad

My favorite scene of all time

What about the journalists who ruined Richard Jewell’s life?

Do I need to do thumbs up or down like in the gladiator

Showing that govt agencies and media get things wrong and ruin people's lives is not 'Trumpian', especially since everything shown in the movie actually happened to Richard and ruined his life. This was a dumb take guys.

The “big lie” was that Richard Jewell was the bomber.

A lot of the left leaning media don’t like Eastwood’s politics and won’t judge his films based on their own merits. In their mind a film isn’t valid unless it lines up with their personal politics. This started with Gran Torino and is gradually getting worse w/every Eastwood film

Have you guys done an equally triggered article about the lies of the journalists who pretty much ruined an innocent man's life?

Cheer up, sacked MPs. A big payday awaitsPublic sector big beasts can console themselves with a promising afterlife in the private sector Yes, it is a huge problem. You have to pay politicians a salary that is competitive with C-level salaries in industry, or corruption is inevitable. You had no such concerns when Tony Blair took a multi-million payday from Middle Eastern tyrants, immediately after taking us into an illegal war there when PM. Perhaps you missed that?
