The best spy novels, according to Daniel Silva and a counterintelligence pro

“‘The Quiet American’ is not a classic tale of espionage, but Graham Greene’s masterpiece of love, betrayal and murder set against the backdrop of the French collapse of Indochina is my favorite novel of foreign intrigue.

John le Carré’s Karla trilogy featuring the matchless George Smiley is undoubtedly the finest series of novels of pure espionage ever written. That said, I’ve always had a soft spot for le Carré’s ‘The Russia House’ and its Scotch-addled hero Barley Blair, who wisely chooses the girl over his country.”
