The Alpina XD3, the first SUV to wear an Alpina badge, may not have been perfect, but it was known for its impressive speed. Despite some downsides, such as its less appealing design and higher price tag, the XD3 was the fastest accelerating diesel-powered SUV available at the time.

The first SUV to wear an Alpina badge had its downsides. Speed wasn't one of themIt’s safe to say the Alpina XD3 was not for everyone. While it was hardly the first on the fast oil-burning SUV on the scene a decade ago, it was Alpina ’s first go at doing one - and for a firm that had chiefly concerned itself with making good-looking BMW saloons even better to drive, the transition wasn’t altogether seamless.

Alongside a recalibrated eight-speed ZF slusher and a sub two-tonne kerbweight, this made the XD3 seem very enthusiastic to get up the road. The concept of a diesel-engined car getting to the national limit in under 5 seconds was not an entirely novel concept at the time, but to do it in a compact SUV definitely added to the eyebrow-raising effect.
