For seven days, snow immobilized the Lake Tahoe region.

Volunteers help a driver who was stranded in Washoe County, Nevada, after being led by a GPS system down a snow-covered two-lane dirt road as an alternative route to the closed Interstate 80 on Monday night, Dec. 27, 2021. Public safety officials warned that alternate routes offered by apps like Google Maps and Waze don't always take into account hazards to drivers.Dec.

“I couldn’t even begin a phone call without getting another call,” Jimenez said. Once he got the call, getting to the location to meet the driver was its own nightmare. “It would take us two and a half hours for a normal eight-minute ride from the casinos and state line to the ‘Y.’”Caltrans via screenshot

Cars often disappear beneath the snow in winter storms as large as the one that passed through the Tahoe region this week.Sue Novasel, El Dorado County supervisor and a Meyers resident of more than 40 years, highlighted the critical need for bathrooms and a rest stop on Highway 50, so people who are stuck in such horrendous traffic have a safe place to pull over.

“There wasn’t a game plan that thought about, you know, there’s probably 30,000-plus people in Northern Nevada waiting to cross the Sierras, and therefore, we ended up with a real emergency on our hands in the city of South Lake Tahoe and in the state of Nevada,” Bass said at the meeting. “We received 234 inches [of snow] on Donner Summit — that’s 19.5 feet in December alone,” said Patrick Bishop, district deputy director of maintenance and operations for Caltrans. Bishop spoke before the roundtable of Lake Tahoe elected officials at a board meeting for the Tahoe Transportation District on Wednesday. Echo Summit received 152 inches, Bishop noted.
