One main takeaway from TIFF: Nomadland is a big deal

: So Richard, the entire concept of handing out a People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto Film Festival seemed a little hard to fathom. Yes, some people saw the films at this year’s festival in person, or at drive-in or outdoor screenings in Toronto. But most of us watched the movies by ourselves in our homes, making it impossible to gauge what so many of us relish at a film festival: an audience actually reacting to a movie.

And yet, our collective favorite movie of the festival wound up winning the People’s Choice Award, suggesting we might not have been so isolated after all., which had just won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival and blew away most critics, too. It’s not exactly a traditional crowdpleaser, but a lot of TIFF People’s Choice winners aren’t—this is the crowd that pickedafter all.

I don’t need to remind you how significant the People’s Choice Award can be for the Oscar race. But just in case: it’s been almost a decade since a TIFF People’s Choice Award winnergo on to be a best picture nominee, making it one of the most reliable indicators of a film’s awards season prospects.
