The That ‘90s Show creators offer insight on the writing process for the That '70s Show spinoff series. The successful decade-based sitcom That '70s Show ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006. It also spawned a British remake in 1999 and a related but separate series called That '80s Show in 2002. Netflix announced the spinoff That '90s Show in October 2021, with Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith returning to reprise their That '70s Show roles 16 years later.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Unlike the short-lived That '80s Show, That '90s Show will be a direct spinoff and sequel series to That '70s Show, featuring several of the characters from the original show as well as their children and sporting much of the same creative team. During a conversation with Variety, Gregg Mettler, who wrote for the original show and co-created the spinoff, spoke about his strategy to avoid running into continuity errors on That '90s Show.
I didn’t want to just write that show again. And as far as the details of the characters, Wikipedia is a great thing to just refresh your memory. I didn’t want to get too heavily bogged down in it, honestly, because I just wanted to write more from the heart and the feeling of the piece. For the sake of the new series, the most important piece of it was where are Eric and Donna now, and where is their daughter.
Of course, That '70s Show was acclaimed early on, primarily running into issues later, with season 8 becoming the show's most reviled installment with other infamous curveballs such as Hyde 's marriage and Fez and Jackie 's relationship. To avoid blindsiding the audience once again, the creators of That '90s Show would do well to focus on character-driven storylines rather than opting for the classic sitcom formula of having the plot drive the characters to action.
Thanks to the shorter season structure typical of Netflix shows, That '90s Show will not face the pressure that is common to network sitcoms such as That '70s Show to stretch a season's content for a particular episode quota, which should keep the creators from having to stuff in unsuccessful plot lines for the sake of air time.
