A new study shows that half as many millennials are moving now versus a decade ago, but Texas remains a top destination for America's largest generation.

America ’s largest generation is packing up and flocking to the Lone Star State . Texas welcomed almost 400,000 millennials as new residents last year, accounting for nearly 10% of all cross-state moves made by people age 27 to 42, according to a recent study from moving company Hire a Helper. The Southern state had 39% more millennials move in than leave in 2023, and its affordable housing might explain why.

“Despite a relatively strong year for job growth and the economy in general, 2023 had the highest mortgage interest rates in recent history with the worst home sales record in 28 years,” it said. Millennials are among the highest earners in the United States, but also the generation with the second highest level of household debt. As of last year, 16% of them reported still living with their parents, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey.
