Texas teachers need childcare options

Many of the nation’s tollways operate in a handful of states. Unlike other states, Texas lags behind in toll discount programs.Richardson ISD’s Little Mustangs Child Learning Academy is seen Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, in Richardson, Texas. Richardson ISD has two Child Learning Academies to offer child care to children of full-time district employees.Teachers face the same challenges as parents everywhere when it comes to finding child care for their children.

Kentucky expanded access to child care to workers who work more than 20 hours a week, regardless of income, benefiting thousands of teachers and children.and Indiana also are exploring new child care policies. Some states now subsidize a portion of child care costs to reduce the financial burden on teachers, and other states have converted empty state buildings to on-site child care for private providers to rent and operate.

Child care and teacher shortages will not be solved quickly, but the seeds of change should be planted next session in Austin..
