Texas lefthander Lucas Gordon allowed one run on nine hits with six strikeouts in 51/3 innings in Saturday’s victory over Louisiana Tech.AUSTIN — The largest crowd ever assembled for a college baseball game at Disch-Falk Field was waiting to erupt Saturday night.
Texas starter Lucas Gordon also spent most of the evening playing with fire, placing runners aboard and in scoring position inning after inning only to escape unscathed. He paid for just one misplaced pitch over the heart of the plate, which second baseman Wade Elliott poked into center field for a game-tying RBI single in the fourth inning.
Still, the Longhorns’ bats didn’t wake up until senior reliever Kyle Crigger replaced Jennings to start the seventh. “Our power will show up, but I just thought we did a good job of fighting with two strikes,” Texas coach David Pierce said. “It's just about a mentality, to be honest. We just we do a good job of scouting, do a good job of knowing what the opposing pitcher is going to do. And they’re gonna go down fighting.”
After entering for Gordon in the sixth, Stevens whizzed strike three past motionless first baseman Philip Matulia to leave runners stranded on the corners and keep the game knotted at 1-1. Stevens, who pitched the final 32/3 innings, did allow a run in the eighth but limited the damage by striking out right fielder Steele Netterville for the third out.
