Free Speech,UT Austin,DEI Ban

In a much-anticipated hearing, the Texas Senate's Higher Education committee will discuss free speech policies at public universities.

Protesters stand with linked arms surrounded by Texas state troopers and police at an encampment at University of Texas in Austin, Texas, Monday, April 29, 2024. In a much-anticipated hearing, the Texas Senate 's Higher Education committee will discuss free speech policies at public universities, as well as the implementation of a ban on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, on Tuesday.

Committee Chair Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, had teased the meeting earlier in the spring, which had only been discussed in the context of the DEI ban, Senate Bill 17. Monitoring the implementation of the DEI ban holds bicameral support. Lt Gov. Dan Patrick, who presides over the Senate, included the topic on his interim charges, as did House Speaker Dade Phelan on Wednesday.

Following the campus demonstrations across the state, including two at UT Austin that resulted in more than 100 total arrests, the calls for addressing free speech and antisemitism at public universities were put onto the hearing's agenda.
